Four years ago, seven in 10 Americans agreed with most of the world’s scientists that global warming and its result, drastic climate change, are threats to human existence.
So it is troubling that today nonbelievers and believers are split about evenly. And that gulf has become angrier as the economy struggles to recover and an election looms.
It appears years of anti-science propaganda by the fossil fuel industry, combined with the complicity of its political allies, has paid dividends. The industry and its hired guns in and out of government claim scientists, liberals and environmentalists have conspired to cry wolf.
But alleging a conspiracy that seeks to ruin the coal, gas, and oil industry “just because” is well past paranoid and nigh into the realm of hysteria.
