Of Sin, Surrealism, and Singing

While driving to work this morning, I was engaged in my usual radio station-surfing when my mind was aroused out of its stupor by a song on the Christian music station. It was undoubtedly one of the strangest songs I’ve ever heard.

Imagine: a female chorus straight out of The Lawrence Welk Show belting a peppy, toe-tapping tune about the end of the world and sinners meeting their eternal damnation.

I at first assumed the song was called “Trumpets Will Sound,” but a bit of Googling revealed it is actually titled “Jesus is Coming Soon.”  It reminded me of what everyone pretends antidepressants are like–the world is crashing down around you but you’ve got a huge Prozac smile like the characters on Soundgarden’s Black Hole Sun music video.

Fun! Play your favorite version of Jesus is Coming Soon while watching a muted version of the Black Hole Sun video.
