Pets or Toys, Vol. 2

How do pet shops market small animals? Are they meant to be companion animals, or are they essentially disposable “toys” for children? Below, some so-called “pocket pets” and their common pet store monikers.

“Teddy Bear hamster” (long-haired golden hamster)

“Pacman frog” (South American horned frog)

“Spider-Man Lizard” (rock agama )

“Robo hamster” (Roborovski desert hamster)

“Fancy hermit crabs” (Land hermit crabs with painted shells)

“Glofish” (patented and trademarked brand of genetically modified (GM) fluorescent zebrafish)
