Erik Marcus tackles the query, “Is honey vegan?”

As somebody who has visited any number of factory farms, and who has spent many months of my life researching animal agribusiness, I believe there is an order of magnitude difference in the suffering of bees compared to, say, battery hens or gestation crate sows.

While honey is indeed something you may decide to avoid for any number of reasons,  I’ve never seen anyone credibly assert that this issue deserves to be given the same attention as the ethical issues surrounding meat, eggs, and dairy. People with all-or-nothing thinking often use honey as a justification to dismiss the vegan concept entirely, and continue eating a diet that includes substantial amounts of animal-based foods.
