To develop better diet pills and obesity related drugs, scientists in Oregon are creating obese lab monkeys for testing.  The obese monkeys are meant to give researchers an “accurate model” of the American “couch potato.”

Since the western world is getting fatter everyday, the demand for diet pills and drugs related to obesity has skyrocketed. Researchers at “obese resource,” housed at Oregon National Primate Research Center, are trying to cash in on the boom. They’ve taken traditional lab monkeys and increased their food intake and decreased their access to exercise.  The lab hopes to create a “couch potato-style” research specimen.  

Monkeys are being raised to develop diabetes, clogged arteries, and other chronic diseases associated with obesity.  Researchers report monkeys dying of heart attacks at very young ages.
